CHICAGO – For the first time in school history, VCU is headed to the Sweet 16. The Rams, who were one of the last teams to receive and at-large berth, thrashed third-seeded Purdue, 94-76 with a dominant offensive performance.
Just two weeks ago, this was a team in the midst of an identity crisis. Now, after three indisputable wins over USC, Georgetown and Purdue, respectively, there is no doubt that the Rams belong in the NCAA Tournament.
Simply put, this was the biggest win in school history. Yes, this is bigger than Duke in ’07 or any of the signature wins of the J.D. Barnett era. This, folks, is history.
Joey Rodriguez was masterful, scoring 12 points, while handing out 11 assists without a turnover. It was a performance that could’ve made Eric Maynor blush. Bradford Burgess is playing the best basketball of his life these last two weeks. He had 23 points and eight rebounds.
More to come. I’ve got to catch a bus. What a week!
